Check out this new promotional video “This is myspace” While this video highlights a much slicker myspace UI, featuring it superstar investor Justin Timberlake, I can’t help but wonder if its all too late. In a world dominated by facebook & twitter, I really don’t think myspace has a shot of getting any kind chance getting its sexyback…see what I did there?

While its huge focus on music with the ability to add songs and music collections (mixes) to your profile might appeal to some, it certainly doesn’t appeal to me. Its Pinterest style of endless blocks of information is completely ruined by its unintuitive & awkward sideways scrolling. As a designer I’m certainly down for “something new” but even as overwhelming as Pinterest was on a first look, and as many design rules its breaks, it was ultimately understandable and digestible by its users. I say digestible cause “I loves my snacks“! And I love seeing all of the genius ideas & amazing food that people post on Pinterest, while I rarely frequent Pinterest these days, I still see its value and appreciate the niche its carved out for itself.

I’ve dedicated hundreds, maybe thousands of hours to Facebook. I really can’t see myself going back to myspace, their simply isn’t a space in my social networking heart for it. While it might be prettier and might be sexier, I can’t bring myself to sign up even with my facebook or twitter account.

While I’m likely not the demographic, ohh how it pains me to be well past any kind of cool demographic. I just don’t think the “new myspace” can succeed, much like Google+, I think it’s going to be a victim of social media overload. I’ve made room for facebook, twitter, Instagram & YouTube but I think i’m at my limit.

Sorry Justin, I feel that your social network is the discarded AOL disc of our internet’s past.

Dolphins have evolved over millions of years, adapting perfectly to life in the ocean. They are intelligent, social and self-aware, exhibiting evidence of a highly developed emotional sense. Here are just a few of the issues with captivity:

Captures of dolphins are traumatic and stressful and can result in injury and death of dolphins. The number of dolphins that die during capture operations or shortly thereafter are never revealed in dolphinariums or swim-with-dolphins programs. Some facilities even claim their dolphins were “rescued” from the ocean and cannot be released. This claim is almost invariably false.

Training of dolphins is often deliberately misrepresented by the captive dolphin industry to make it look as if dolphins perform because they like it. This isn’t the case. They are performing because they have been deprived of food.

Most captive dolphins are confined in minuscule tanks containing chemically treated artificial seawater. Dolphins in a tank are severely restricted in using their highly developed sonar, which is one of the most damaging aspects of captivity. It is much like forcing a person to live in a hall of mirrors for the rest of their life – their image always bouncing back with no clear direction in sight.

Kunta Kinteh Island: “Coming Home Without Shackles” chronicles the pride, strength and journey of the most celebrated captive African, Kunta Kinteh. The saga of Kunta Kinteh’s life was characterized and featured in an American made-for-TV movie and book entitled Roots, created by his descendent Alex Haley. The book and film highlighted the life of an African warrior-in-training who was enslaved and brought to the New World, the Americas, during the West African Slave Trade.

During this forced exodus, Kunta Kinteh was captured and transported to James Island where he was held captive for 15 days before being shipped as cargo to the Americas.  Recently, Alhaji Dr. Yahya Abdul-Aziz Jemus Junkung Jammeh, President of the Republic of The Gambia, reclaimed and renamed the old British Fortress from James Island to KUNTA KINTEH ISLAND to honor his legacy.  Although Kunta Kinteh was captured, shackled and abducted from his homeland, his legacy returns home to Jufferreh, The Gambia, West Africa, without shackles.

Filmmaker, Elvin Ross, makes his debut as writer and director for this epic documentary feature. Elvin and his production company, e. ross studios, captured the spirit and essence of the Gambian people during the Roots Festival in February 2011 whereby the island is renamed. The ruins of the fortress, which were restored through grants from both the Netherlands and the USA, serve as a backdrop to this film. As a means of introducing the subject matter to a younger audience, veteran actor Ben Vereen offers a dramatic rendering of a grandfather re-telling his family’s history to his young grandson.  Vereen brilliantly introduces a past, which includes present-day interviews with Kinteh family members that still reside in Juffureh.  This documentary highlights the pride of a people that were so strong that they were known as some of the greatest hunters and warriors on the continent. This movie focuses on the lessons taught by Kunta Kinteh’s grandmother, Yaisa, which rang as truths in his spirit, freeing his mind even when he lost his physical freedom. Because of the lessons he learned, today’s African American may return to the Mother Land with heads held high, knowing that they can survive any obstacle and flourish in any environment as long as they stay true to their inner convictions.
